This is inspired by a pillar beside shops and restaurants I once saw on holiday. It looked so inviting - to sit on sun-warmed stone and to contemplate where to go for the first cup of coffee of the day. Then a young man and his dog started to head to do just that and the idea pinged in the tiny brain.
What to paint when the rain is falling and the day is dark? This painting was inspired by a walk in Cornwall. I loved the concentration of the figure which definitely forbids any approach or conversation, even from fellow painters! I tiptoed onwards....
Ah, that old chestnut - the flagrant breaching of an artist's copyright! Today I was made aware that a militaria journal had used one of my paintings, anonymously, for the cover of its December 2013 edition. This is upsetting as, although I still own the copyright, the painting is owned elsewhere - and, to compound the sin, the magazine has made its reproduction at quite a large size from a limited edition print! It would have taken a few seconds to find my contact details via the internet. Copyright is such a serious matter but this is far from being the first time it has happened to me. Anyway, at least they will attribute it to me in the next edition..........and include an apology!
It's the beginning of a new year and artists can be a bit off-message. It is also very tough to sell so deep into a recession. However, a Dutch artist has given of her valuable time to create a series of FREE videos and pdf copies full of guidance and ideas on how to increase your sales, raise your profile, harness the essential social networking sources and much more. She knows her stuff and you can sign up on her website to receive each instalment: go to Art & Business Course at top right on her home page -http://rosepleinair.comYou can also find her on Facebook, YouTube etc. Highly recommend.
On 1 January I designed a Facebook page for the Armed Forces Art Society - the premier art society of the UK's armed forces. The membership include serving, ex-serving and their spouses, and the Reserves. The page appears to have hit the spot with the membership and there are quite a number of artworks to be seen in the Albums. A new website is planned but this gives us a public presence in the meantime.
A young, accomplished and multi-skilled artist worth taking a look at is Jamie Vaulkhardwww.jamesvaulkhard.comI've known Jamie pretty much most of his life and his mother many decades longer! I selected Jamie for what might have been his first art prize when he was about 9 or 10. It has been so good to see the signs of his artistic potential coming good over the years. The photo was taken by my professional photographer son Will Bremridge wwwbphoto.com
Arkell's Brewery in Swindon, UK www.arkells.com is launching a beer in March with one of my military caricatures on the label. It's website has this description of the beer: "Brewed especially for George Arkell, James's eldest son, in recognition of his service in the Territorial Army.
Taste: a light, session beer with plenty of satisfying hop characterAvailable: March 2014"
